On Wednesday 7th February forecast charts were
beginning to align indicating a major snow event for England and Wales.
The 850hpa temperature was set to be at or below -5C for the majority of
the country and surface temperatures were also well below freezing in
most areas. Snowfalls of up to 10cm were expected as a warm front moved
in from the southwest. With all this in mind the UK Storm Chasers were
ready to go the night before with a shovel in the boot and ski jackets
prepared!
At 2:30am on Thursday 8th February we set off from
Winchester setting Oxford as our target. By 4am we had encountered heavy
snowfall with depths to around 2 inches. We pulled into a service
station to take pictures but slid sideways on ice just stopping before
hitting a 12inch high curb! The snow was still heavy but the UK Storm
Chasers were not going to be beaten as we headed further North on
treacherous roads towards Oxford. On reaching our target at 5am we left
the dual carriageway onto the Oxford Ring-Road but had massive problems
stopping. Our wheels locked on the steep downward slope and we estimate
we skidded over 100 yards before finally stopping just before the
roundabout!! The snow by this point was 3 inches deep and it was snowing
at the heaviest rate yet. After a brief photo stop it was time to head
back so that we made it home in time for work. At 7am we had battled
back to Winchester and by 9:30am we were at work in Bournemouth and
London!
