At last, something to chase! It was a long shot but CAPE was forecast at
over 1000j/kg so we decided to chase despite there being no cap, no dry
mid layer, any shear and dewpoints were also horribly low!! We started
the chase at Templecombe, aiming to work our way back towards the New
Forest. It looked rubbish so we decided to head to the high ground of
Salisbury Plain where initiation of surface based storms were more
likely.
We intercepted a cell and punched the core twice, being rewarded with
10mm hail and torrential rain. However there was much less CAPE than the
GFS had predicted and so the updrafts were relatively weak. The storms
soon became feathery and dissipated but unusually we weren't far from
home!
