The 18th August 2006 Torro issued a tornado watch covering
the majority of England, this a higher risk of stronger tornadoes
covering East Anglia. The UK Storm Chasers decided early in the day to
chase but were hampered due to the absence of a chase vehicle, at 5pm a
vehicle was obtained from Martins brother Phillip. So Martin sped to
Alastair in Winchester and arrived just in time for the watch to expire!
Never to be disheartened the UK Storm Chasers hit the road to a location
just north of the M25 that current convection indicated would be the
most suitable target. On reaching the M25 the situation was looking
terrible with decayed anvils littering the sky only broken buy very
shallow cumulus development. We decided to phone our outside data source
who informed us that convection was ongoing just to the west of
Northampton. We joined the M1 north and raced towards our last hope of a
thunderstorm, which we sighted ahead in the dwindling light. However it
no longer resembled much more than a scraggy rain cloud. On approaching
its base it was only raining lightly so we decided to stop at a service
station to get some much needed data, unfortunately there was no
internet point in sight and we were forced to plough on in search of
better resources. Following a phone call a friend of the UK Storm
Chasers, David Leah
rendezvoused with us at the next station north where after phoning for
more info we decided to end the chase and return home.
