On 26th July 2006 storms from France approached the southern
counties of the UK at approximately 8pm. Martin and his brother
Christopher set off for the beach from there home in Poole to track the
storms and take advantage of the photo opportunity. On reaching
Sandbanks they realised that the storms were further east than
anticipated, and were now approximately over Southampton and heading
north. At exactly the same time fellow storm chaser Alastair had
observed storms to the south of his Winchester home. His rushed to set
up his array of photographic equipment and caught what only can be
described as some incredible lightning photographs.
Martin and Chris set off from the coast and headed towards the New
Forest for a further opportunity to observe the lightning. However the
storms were moving rapidly north and so they tracked after them on the
M3 directly towards Winchester. At this point it was realised that UK
Storm Chasers were about to embark on there first UK chase.
It was agreed that we needed to get ahead of the storms and so we set
an area North East of Reading as our initial target. On reaching the M4
several spectacular CG’s and CC’s were observed and the UK Storm Chasing
team were extremely optimistic. However the optimism was short lived as
the storm began to lose its electrification but UK Storm Chasers did not
give in and chased the decaying storm to its death just north High
Wycome.
Although not the most successful chase, we saw a few good lightning
strikes and managed to get a half page article in the Hampshire
chronicle the following week.
